In the late afternoon, photography was difficult as I was shooting into the sun, but itd be an excellent place for sunset. Head down to the Moyne River and stretch your legs along the wharves. Most of the time I was fine in my Allbirds wool runners, but I was glad for hiking shoes on the muddy trails to the waterfalls in Great Otway National Park. Total Distance: 1,121 km. G.O.R.G.E Chocolates (20 minutes from Port Campbell) is a small, low-key chocolate shop thats very different from the touristy affair of the Great Ocean Road Chocolaterie. (I would have liked to stay longer but we were getting hungry for lunch as it was after 2pm). Despite staying close to Apollo Bay, we loved our cottage so much that we didnt visit the town until our way out. As the area is popular with day tour buses from Melbourne, the Twelve Apostles are busiest in the afternoon. Lorne is one of the most popular towns on a Great Ocean Road Trip. Its worth a quick stop to admire the surfers riding the waves from the viewing platform above. They are happy for you to wander the property to see the horses, chickens, pigs, and sheep. Following the Otway Harvest Trail choose between local breweries, berry and fruit farms with quaint cafes, provedore grocers and restaurants a plenty. This rock arch was once connected to the mainland until in collapsed in 1990 (leaving two tourists trapped but uninjured). I recommend overnight stays near Apollo Bay and Port Campbell as we did. You are free to wander around the farm to try to see koalas and wallabies or head down to the lovely private beach for a walk or surf. I highly recommend visiting in the morning to truly enjoy it. After passing through Port Campbell, youll pass by The Arch and London Bridge.
At 8.30am we had it entirely to ourselves. On this five-day self-drive trip, explore the coastal capital city of Melbourne and then hit the open road. As it's a fairly leisurely drive why not break up the short journey and enjoy the sights of the Victorian Surf Coast along the way. . From your third and final spot it will only be around a 30 minute drive to your final destination, we recommend settling into your Lorne accommodation, then either relaxing or going for a wander around the quaint town of Lorne. They are full of handmade art and crafts and locally made treats to indulge in like jams, pastries, pickles and ice-cream. FromWarrnambool Breakwaterall the way toLogans Beachthis is a great spot to take in the coastal views and even pass a little penguin breeding ground.

Do allocate as much time as you can, thoughits a gorgeous part of the world with plenty to see. The cottages are quite close together, so if you take a bath with the blinds up, you do have to trust your neighbours wont walk in front of your cottage (we had no issues).

If you start early and arrive by late morning, youll have a good chance of enjoying the Twelve Apostles without the crowds. We recommend Rental Cars, which has the largest range of vehicles for the best value on the market. On the way youll see Tom and Eva, two rock stacks named after the only survivors of the shipwreck.

Halfway along the Surf Coast walk its only around a 3km round trip from the town, up the point for amazing views over the town and ocean crashing below.
The three stops above are a good half-day trip, but if you have a full day you can continue on to Otway Fly Treetop Adventures where you can go zip lining (book ahead, $120) or walk above the trees on the elevated treetop walk ($25). Our first stop was just outside Torquay and was a slight detour off the Great Ocean Road.
You can take a bus from Melbourne Airport (MEL) to Lorne via Skybus Coach Terminal/Southern Cross, Southern Cross Coach Terminal/Spencer St, and Geelong in around 5h 11m.
The ocean route via Angelsea (159km) is a spectacular coastal drive and an excellent introduction to the Great Ocean Road. You can also compare many rental companies and find the cheapest cars at Rental Cars. It hugs the coastline with many twists and turns and stunning ocean views. One of Victoria's most scenic drives, Great Ocean Road provides plenty of exciting pit stopsexplore the surfing town of Bells Beach, discover the waterfalls of Lorne, zipline through the Otway Ranges, and visit The Twelve Apostles rock formations. You need to head down to the lower viewing platform to appreciate it, which is a 700-metre return walk with stairs from the car park. We personally stayed there when we travelled across Australia, and highly recommend it. After the last couple of years, it seems everyone wants to be out and about and go travelling. You need to park just off the road and then walk up the hill to the lighthouse. Although officially the Great Ocean Road starts in Geelong, Melbourne is the ideal start to the trip as it provides the contrast of a big city with the quiet of the small towns dotted along the Great Ocean Road. What is a partial cave, archway and blowhole, The Grotto is definitely something to marvel at. To drive direct from the Melbourne CBD to Torquay, where the road officially starts, is 104km, or 1 hour and 20 minutes.
We spent four days self-driving the road from Melbourne, but you could follow our Great Ocean Road itinerary in two or three days if necessary (we had a fair amount of relaxation time). While you could scale this drive down to a 2 or 3-day itinerary, I'd recommend 1 or 2 weeks to fully enjoy it. Although the property is along the road itself, the cottages are perched upon the cliffside and it feels wonderfully tranquil with only the sound of crashing waves below. There are several veggie options and the lentil burger was decent, if nothing special.
The inland route is generally the quicker choice for these times. Griffiths Islandcan be accessed by a footbridge nearby to the wharf and is a great place to do a little bird watching. RACQ's Trip Planner allows you to find places, get directions or plan your next road trip. The Grotto is unlike any of the other rock formations in the area. But all the views are spectacular on this stretch of the Great Ocean Road Trip. Built in honour of the 3,000 soldiers who worked on this stretch of road after WWI, there is now also a sculpture there to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the arch. And sadly our Great Ocean Road trip was over. I definitely recommend allocating a few hours to explore it all.
We walked all of the trails except for the furthest section between Broken Head and Sherwood Estuary and walked a total of 6km (3.7 miles). Its a beautiful drive but slow going.
Hi Tracy, November is a beautiful time to travel the Great Ocean Road.
The steps lead to a beach where you can get another view of the Twelve Apostles, but unfortunately, they were closed for safety reasons on our visit. With great facilities, cozy apartment-style suites and great views from almost any room on site, this is your best choice if youd like a bit of space to stretch out after a big day of driving the Great Ocean Road.
As we were staying so close we were able to arrive early and easily take breaks between exploring different areas. The Arch is the first in a series of rock formations where you can stop for a quick look from viewing platforms. From the car park its a short walk to a viewpoint of the beach surrounded by cliffs. For most people, the trip willstart in Melbourneand can be done in a loop or a return journey. This lookout gives you the chance to see right out to sea and over the entire city. trip dates & more!
Its a fairly steep climb back up to the car park where there are toilets. It consists of three cottages on a 160-acre farm owned by Bryan and Joan. Brekkie tacos, smoothie bowls and a full lunch menu to eat in or take away will please anyone visiting. There are two viewing platforms to admire London Bridge a short walk from the car park. We know what you mean by just taking your time and booking the day of but we would recommend booking in advance as it is so much busier now. You can also travel from Melbourne to Adelaide via the Great Ocean Road, but youll need at least a few days as its a distance of nearly 1000km (620 miles).
Its a small village, but Port Campbell is a nice place to stop for a snack and some fuel. Below Ive included driving times between stops and how long we spent at each destination. When you continue down the road, the Cape Patton Lookout Point is a good place for views. We visited in mid-September (early spring) and there was frost on our car one morning, so tent camping is probably best in the summer.

It starts in Torquay, which is 105km (65 miles) from Melbourne, and continues westward along the coast to finish at Allansford near Warrnambool. If you have more energy than us (or an extra night), the final stops we would have visited were Childers Cove, an uncrowded beach (30 minutes from Port Campbell), and Logans Beach Whale Watching Platform (1 hour from Port Campbell) where you have the chance to see whales in the winter. The Lightstation is open every day from 10am 5pm (except for Christmas Day), but if you arrive out of hours, you can still walk along the lovely coastal trail that starts by the car park.
Top Road Trips Stops: Torquay, Lorne, Great Otway National Park, 12 Apostles, Logan's Beach, Mount Gambier. Journey Time: 15 minutes from Points South by the SeaStop Time: 15 minutes. Turn off for this road just before you reach Apollo Bay. Soaring high above the limestone stacks youll get the best views of Victorias Shipwreck Coast.
Many people also continue inland to the Grampians National Park, a fantastic hiking and wildlife location, before returning to Melbourne via the old gold mining town of Ballarat.
Its only a 10-minute drive from the Twelve Apostles so was very convenient for getting there early. Friday. The cottage is very well-equipped and Bryan is a fantastic host who goes out of his way to help you make the most of your stay and share his tips for the area. Loch Ard Gorgeis the first attraction on the way, just a stones throw from the Twelve Apostles.

If you really want a unique perspective though, and love a bit of adventure, how does skydiving over the 12 Apostles sound? If you had plenty of time, you might want to spend a night here as there are some beautiful beaches and waterfalls nearby. Simon had a reusable coffee cup but wished hed had a larger flask for our early start at Twelve Apostles (the kiosk there doesnt open until 10am).
Walk back down to the base of the bluff to enjoy relaxing on the beach for a while.
