INDIANAPOLIS (BP)-Bobby Welch, pastor of First Baptist Church in Daytona Beach, Fla., was elected president of the Southern Baptist Convention June 15. Citing the nearness of the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention in Greensboro, N.C., June 13-14, and the possibility that members of the press would ask him about retirement, Welch said he wanted to get a head start on things.
